USE OF HAND WRAPS IN MUAY THAI

Muay Thai hand wraps are very important and should always be part of your basic equipment when training or competing in Muay Thai. We strongly recommend using them at all times—during daily training, when working on the heavy bag, with Muay Thai pads, or with focus mitts.

They help prevent injuries to the fingers, wrist sprains, and friction that can cause small burns on the hands.
Another important function is to compact the hand and provide support to the fingers and wrist at the moment of impact.

A lesser-known function is that they absorb sweat during training, helping protect the inside of your gloves.

Are boxing wraps and Muay Thai wraps the same?

Yes, they are the same type of protection. They may appear different, but they are essentially the same product.

HOW MUAY THAI HAND WRAPS ARE CLASSIFIED

    Different lengths

You can find Muay Thai wraps in several sizes:

    • 2.5 meters (for children)

    • 3.5 meters (for women, experienced children, or youth fighters)

    • 4 meters (for experienced women, lightweight men, or youth fighters)

    • 4.5 meters or 5 meters (for adult men or experienced women)

    By manufacturing material

Cotton Muay Thai wraps – Very rigid and not commonly used nowadays.

Elastic Muay Thai wraps – Some people prefer them, but in our opinion, although they adapt well to the hand, you must know how to wrap them properly because they can restrict circulation if applied too tightly.

Semi-elastic Muay Thai wraps – From our specialized online Muay Thai shop, these are the ones we recommend. They provide a good balance between rigidity and flexibility, offering better security and comfort.

    TIPS AND MAINTENANCE

    • Do not wash them in the washing machine. It is better to wash them by hand in a container with mild soap.

    • Wash your Muay Thai wraps every day they are used.

    • Do not leave them in a closed space after training.

    • Do not put them in the dryer, as this may deform the wraps. Let them air dry.

    • How to roll your wraps: At Club de la Lucha, we recommend starting from the thumb-loop end. Roll the wrap with one hand while the other hand keeps the wrap slightly stretched. This helps keep the wrap in good condition and extends its lifespan.

    • Always use them during any striking training.

    • We do NOT recommend replacing wraps with knuckle protectors (also known as gel wraps).

    KID’S MUAY THAI EQUIPMENT

When training, children need the same protective gear as adults, but adapted to their weight and size.

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT MUAY THAI PROTECTIONS FOR CHILDREN’S TRAINING?

Kids’ boxing gloves – to protect the hands. The glove weight can be 4 oz, 6 oz, or 8 oz.
Kids’ boxing mouthguardprotects the mouth and lips.
Kids’ boxing hand wraps – used to support the wrists. The recommended length is 2.5 meters. For very young children, we do not recommend using them.
Muay Thai / Kickboxing shin guards – to protect the shins and the instep of the foot. You can find two different models: sock-style shin guards, which are more economical and suitable for beginners, and rigid shin guards for more intense training.

IMPORTANCE OF USING CHILDREN’S EQUIPMENT IN MUAY THAI

    • Prevents unnecessary injuries
    • Increases confidence during training
    • Creates habits of order and discipline

    RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN BUYING CHILDREN’S EQUIPMENT

    • When buying kids’ boxing gloves, it is very important to consider the child’s body weight.
Shin guard sizing is determined by the child’s weight and height. If in doubt, always choose one size larger so they can be used for a longer time.
    • Take the equipment out of the gym bag after training and air it in a cool, dry place.
Wash the hand wraps in the sink with water and liquid soap.
Store the mouthguard in its case and always keep it in the same place.

  • Mouthguards

ESSENTIAL USE OF A MUAY THAI MOUTHGUARD

The best way to protect the inside of your mouth during Muay Thai training and competition is by using a boxing mouthguard.

    • Protects the teeth

    • Prevents cuts inside the mouth or on the lips

    • Stabilizes the jaw

    • Distributes the impact vibration

    • Helps regulate breathing through the nose

WHEN SHOULD A MUAY THAI MOUTHGUARD BE USED?

A mouthguard should be used whenever there is a possibility of contact. When we refer to a Muay Thai mouthguard, we mean a general type of protection that can be used in any sport or self-defense training.

In competition, it is mandatory, and we recommend using it at all times during training—even when there is no contact.

    TYPES OF MOUTHGUARDS

We can distinguish two types of mouthguards:

    – Single: Worn on the upper teeth; these are the most commonly used.

Within single mouthguards, we can classify them based on how they adapt to the mouth:

No filling: Made only of a rigid silicone mold.

Gel mouthguard: A rigid silicone mold filled with a solid gel layer that softens when heated, allowing it to mold to the teeth.

Professional paste mouthguard: Consists of a rigid mold and two compounds that, when mixed, form a paste used to mold the teeth.

    – Double: Protect both the upper and lower jaw. They are more uncomfortable during training because they restrict airflow compared to single mouthguards.

WHICH MOUTHGUARD SHOULD I USE: SINGLE OR DOUBLE? PROS AND CONS

The most commonly used mouthguard for Muay Thai training and competition is the single type because it is more comfortable and allows better breathing. We recommend it for daily training.

Double mouthguards have the disadvantage of requiring you to keep your mouth closed, making them more uncomfortable. They only allow breathing through small openings, which becomes more difficult with increased effort. However, they help keep the jaw firmly in place and are useful for people with braces, as they protect the lower lip from cuts.

DO ALL MOUTHGUARDS MOLD THE SAME WAY?

At Club de la Lucha, we recommend following the instructions included with the mouthguard.

However, here are some general guidelines:

Single mouthguard: Place it in boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove from the pot (do not use a microwave; always use a stovetop), then briefly place it in room-temperature water for one second. Put it in your mouth, bite firmly, and press with your fingers to shape it to your teeth. Keep your mouth closed for one minute. Remove carefully and let it cool.

Gel mouthguard: Place it in boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove from the pot (do not use a microwave; always use a stovetop), then briefly place it in room-temperature water for one second. Put it in your mouth, bite naturally (do not clench as hard as possible), and keep your mouth closed for one minute without touching it. Remove carefully and let it cool.

    Paste mouthguard: FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Double mouthguard: Do not mold if used with braces.

    ARE THERE MOUTHGUARDS FOR CHILDREN?

Yes, and at Club de la Lucha we recommend them not only for martial arts competitions or contact sports, but also for any type of training. They are one of the most important protective pieces of equipment in boxing and contact sports.

    MAINTENANCE

Rinse and dry thoroughly after training before storing

Always store it in its case

Keep it in the same place in your gym bag or boxing backpack

For competition, choose white or transparent

Occasionally rinse with a mixture of water and mouthwash

    Muay Thai Shin Guards

Muay Thai shin guards are designed to protect the tibia and instep. In the market you can find two types of shin guards, rigid and sock type:

    - The rigid ones: Also known as tubular, they provide more protection with high-quality padding to absorb impacts in the tibial area, such as the instep, with a velcro back closure made of the same material as the shin guard. They also come with an elastic to support the heel and prevent the shin guard from riding up. The only drawback that rigid shin guards have, which are very uncomfortable to work MMA, does not leave you freedom of movement to move around the floor and work on it. They are used in Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, Full Contact, etc.

    - Sock type: They are the ones used mostly in MMA, but they can be used in any contact sport. They do not bring as much protection as rigid shin guards, but they do give freedom of movement to work on the ground, which is what MMA fighters look for. With a high quality padding and its way of placing it is as if you were putting on a sock. Very comfortable.

You will find several models with one size in the market, but most of them you will find in sizes S, M, L or XL. To have an orientation reference we can classify in:

    - Sizes: less than 37 cm (from instep to knee), less than 16 cm (from instep to foot).

    - Size M: 37 cm to 38 cm (from instep to knee), 6.5 to 18 cm (from instep to foot).

    - Size L: 39 cm to 40.5 cm (from instep to knee), 19 cm to 20.5cm (from instep to foot).

    - Size XL: 40.5cm onwards (from the instep to the knee), more than 20.5 cm (from the instep to the foot).

The important thing about shin guards is that they fit the leg in the best possible way, without disturbing or limiting movements, since the wrestler will continually subject them to receiving blows and they must remain firm without moving.

The designs on the shin guards can be found to suit everyone, since there are endless shapes and patterns. You will find them from the most discreet possible to striking, and to the personal preferences of each one.

You will find on our Club de la Lucha website, a wide catalog of shin guards, both rigid or tubular and sock-like with brands from Leone, Buddha, Yokkao, Danger, etc. If you have any more specific questions, do not hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to help you.

    Types of groin guards

In our fight club store you can find different models of groin guards in contact sports or martial arts. Not only should you pay attention to a good model of boxing gloves or good hitting cloths, but you should also take care of and protect the genital area from impacts. Choose the one that best suits us according to the sport we practice, the material it is made of and the one that is most comfortable for us in training.

We recommend its use in all training or competition to avoid unnecessary blows or accidents. Any involuntary blow in that area apart from breaking your concentration or attention that you have at that moment, also generates a bad feeling of the body, therefore its use is appropriate.

In the market you can find different materials and different shapes:

    - Boxing cups with plastic groin guard: They are of the lowest quality and only recommended for very low intensity workouts.

    - Boxing cups with plastic groin guard and silicone edges: They are the most used since it adapts very well, quite comfortable and of good quality.

    - Metal boxing cups: You can find them made of aluminum or steel, they are the best quality but they are quite uncomfortable making movement difficult.

    - Removable cups: of good quality used in martial arts (karate cups) and some contact sports (krav maga cups).

    - Taekwondo groin guards: It is the most traditional model as it comes with straps to tie the metal groin guard. They come approved with the certificate of the moment.

    - Boxing groin guard: They are the safest since they protect the genital area, the lower abdomen and lower back. For exclusive use in boxing.

On our website you can find female, male and children's groin guard. If you have any other more specific questions, do not hesitate to contact us and help us choose the one that best suits the contact sport or martial art you practice.

  • Ankle supports

Muay Thai ankle supports, also known as "ankle wraps," are a common accessory used by practitioners of this martial art to provide additional support to the ankles. These ankle supports help protect the joint during training and fights, as Muay Thai involves quick movements, kicks, and pivoting that can strain the ankles.

Common Features of Muay Thai Ankle Supports

    1. Material: They are usually made of elastic materials like nylon, polyester, or a blend of both, allowing for a comfortable and flexible fit.

    2. Compression:They provide compression to help keep the ankle in a secure position and reduce the risk of sprains or injuries.

    3. Design: They often cover from the base of the foot to just above the ankle, leaving the heel and toes uncovered to avoid restricting movement.

    4. Breathability: The design and material allow for ventilation, keeping the foot dry during training.

    5. Variety of Colors and Styles: Ankle supports come in various colors and designs.

    6. Grip: They offer good grip to stay securely in place.

    Benefits

    - Injury Prevention: They help prevent injuries by stabilizing the ankle.

    - Recovery Support: They can be helpful for people recovering from previous injuries by providing additional support.

How to Choose the Right Ankle Supports

    - Size and Fit: Generally, they come in a one-size-fits-all.

    - Material Quality: Often made from a polyester and cotton blend.

    - Purpose: Some ankle supports are specifically designed to offer more support, while others are mainly for compression and comfort.

Muay Thai ankle supports are a simple yet effective accessory for protecting one of the most vulnerable areas in this sport.
