WHAT ARE MUAY THAI SHIN GUARDS?
They are leg protection gear used for training in Muay Thai or self-defense systems. They are designed with specific features to protect primarily the shin and the instep.

 

TYPES OF MUAY THAI SHIN GUARDS
There are two main types:

  • Rigid Muay Thai shin guards: They provide greater protection and durability. The padding absorbs strong impacts and they are usually reinforced in the shin and instep areas.
    The fastening system is located at the back with Velcro straps. They can be adjusted directly or through loops on the shin guard itself. For the foot, they typically include a wide elastic band under the sole to secure the instep and another elastic strap around the heel.
    They are not ideal for versatile MMA training, as they tend to shift during ground techniques.

  • Sock-type shin guards: Mainly used in MMA, but also suitable for any combat sport or martial art. They do not offer as much protection as rigid shin guards. They are easy to put on and take off, and in Muay Thai they are mostly used in amateur competition or for beginner and youth training.

 

MUAY THAI SHIN GUARD SIZES
Sock-type shin guards are usually one-size-fits-all, while rigid Muay Thai shin guards come in sizes S, M, L, or XL.

As a general reference:

  • Size S: less than 37 cm (from instep to knee), less than 16 cm (from instep to foot)

  • Size M: 37–38 cm (instep to knee), 16.5–18 cm (instep to foot)

  • Size L: 39–40.5 cm (instep to knee), 19–20.5 cm (instep to foot)

  • Size XL: more than 40.5 cm (instep to knee), more than 20.5 cm (instep to foot)
