    WHAT ARE MMA GLOVES?

Essential equipment for practicing Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Also known as MMA fingerless gloves, they are the most useful specific protective gear for MMA training and competition, as they allow you to strike and grapple while facilitating submission and clinch techniques.

Their design provides adequate protection when used properly.

TYPES OF MMA GLOVES AND WHICH ONE SHOULD I CHOOSE TO START TRAINING?

The two main models differ primarily in the amount of padding in the knuckle area, which determines the level of protection:

    • Amateur or training MMA gloves – These typically weigh around 7 ounces. They are used for daily training or controlled sparring. They feature extra padding in the knuckle area.

    • Competition MMA gloves – These typically weigh around 4 ounces. They have less padding than training gloves and are used exclusively for competition.

CAN MMA GLOVES BE USED FOR HEAVY BAG TRAINING?

We do not recommend using MMA gloves to hit the heavy bag:

    • You may burn your fingers due to friction against the boxing bag.

    • They have minimal padding, which increases the risk of injuring your wrists or knuckles.

CAN MMA GLOVES BE USED FOR MARTIAL ARTS OR SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING?

Yes, they can be used, but proper usage is essential to avoid injuries.
In particular, they should not be used for power drills or uncontrolled sparring with a partner.

WHAT ARE THE MOST RECOMMENDED MMA GLOVE BRANDS?

There is a wide variety of brands on the market. Based on our experience, we recommend:

    • Venum MMA gloves – If you are looking for design and quality.

    • Leone MMA gloves – Excellent value for money with strong attention to design. A good option for intermediate to advanced training.

    • Utuk MMA gloves – Focused exclusively on training gloves for beginners. Good value for money with a shape that facilitates grappling.

ARE THERE MMA PACKS THAT INCLUDE MMA GLOVES?

In our specialized MMA and combat sports store, we aim to support people who are starting their training journey by offering affordable equipment packs from the Utuk brand.

Within our MMA equipment selection, we offer two different packs:

    • Basic MMA Training Pack – Includes MMA gloves + tubular shin guards + small MMA hand wraps + MMA mouthguard.

    • MMA Training Pack – Includes MMA gloves + rigid Muay Thai shin guards + small MMA hand wraps + MMA mouthguard.

SHOULD YOU USE HAND WRAPS WITH MMA GLOVES DURING TRAINING?

We always recommend using boxing hand wraps.
The recommended length is 2.5 meters.

This shorter length ensures they fit properly inside MMA gloves. Hand wraps are very important because they protect your knuckles and wrists from impact vibration.

    EarGUARDS

We all know the cauliflower ear and to avoid this deformation, it is necessary to use good earmuffs. Cauliflower ear It is a deformation produced in the gelatinous tissue of the ear, caused by strong and repetitive blows in the area. This malformation is irreversible and brings consequences such as pain, discomfort to sleep, hearing problems and loss of balance.

Some wrestlers regard it as a medal or status symbol, a sign that they have trained no matter what. From Club de la Lucha recommend the use of earmuffs for your protection. They are generally made of neoprene, with padding in the ear area and velcro or button closures. Comfortable, flexible materials and are made to avoid irritation and friction.

Knee Pads for BJJ, MMA and Grappling

Equipment to practice Muay Thai, BJJ, MMA or Grappling. They can be used in training or competition whether you are a beginner or advanced level.

The knees are one of the most complex parts of our body. The bones that compose it, joints, ligaments and cartilage. A knee injury can affect our daily lives, so we highly recommend its use for the practice of contact sports, in addition to taking care of our rival who will be the one who receives our knees.

They come with adjustable designs to the different legs, they are comfortable, they bring with them innovative shock absorption systems and also, in the case of Venum, they have developed a new ventilation technology that cancels the effects of perspiration.

SPECIFIC FEATURES OF MMA SHORTS (FIGHTSHORTS)
When training or competing in MMA, not just any shorts will do. They must be comfortable, lightweight, and durable.

    ·         They are usually made entirely or mostly from stretch fabric to provide greater freedom of movement.

    ·         Non-elastic waistband with a Velcro closure to prevent them from moving during training.

    ·         Internal drawstring for extra security and a better fit.

    ·         No external pockets; some models include an inner pocket to store a boxing mouthguard.

    ·         Designs are always sublimated to avoid embroidery that could scratch.

    ·         It is very important to buy MMA shorts from a reputable brand that uses high-quality materials to ensure durability.

CAN MUAY THAI SHORTS BE USED FOR MMA TRAINING?
We do not recommend using Muay Thai shorts for MMA training because, due to the type of training involved, they are likely to tear and will constantly move out of place.

CAN MMA SHORTS BE USED FOR TRAINING IN OTHER DISCIPLINES?
Yes. In fact, they are very versatile thanks to their comfort. Combined with their usually excellent designs, they are very attractive for training in other disciplines.

Disciplines where they are most commonly used besides MMA:

    ·         Krav Maga or self-defense training

    ·         Cross-training or functional fitness

WHAT SIZE SHOULD I BUY? TYPES OF FIGHTSHORTS
This mainly depends on the brand, but generally they follow the same size equivalence you normally wear.

Keep in mind that there are two types of fightshorts:

    ·         A longer model that reaches the knee

    ·         A shorter model that reaches mid-thigh

    RECOMMENDED MMA SHORTS BRANDS

    ·         Venum – The number one brand. It offers quality, variety, and design, and sponsors major events and the most important fighters worldwide.

  • MMA shin guards

WHAT SHIN GUARDS CAN WE USE FOR MMA TRAINING?

Shin guards are very important protective gear in the training of any martial art or combat sport. In MMA, different disciplines are trained at the same time, so the best approach is to train with two different types of shin guards to optimize training and avoid injuries.

For striking training, the best shin guards we can use are Muay Thai shin guards. They are rigid, with reinforcement in the shin area and protection on the instep. They are durable and provide much better protection from impacts.

For ground training, however, we need shin guards that fit the leg as closely as possible and do not move. The best option is sleeve-style (tubular) shin guards. This model is the one most commonly associated with MMA shin guards. They are perfect for ground training, but they have less padding, so they are not recommended for high-power striking sessions.

TYPES OF TUBULAR MMA SHIN GUARDS

    • One difference you may find among tubular shin guards is whether they include instep protection or not. Our recommendation is: the more protection, the better.

    • Another important difference is whether they include extra padding reinforcement in the shin area. The basic versions are the most commonly sold, but for intermediate and advanced levels, padded models are a good option because they can also be used for striking training.

    MMA SHIN GUARD SIZING

    • Tubular MMA shin guards: available in children’s sizes or adult sizes.

    • Rigid Muay Thai shin guards: available in children’s sizes and adult sizes S, M, L, and XL.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BUY THE MOST AFFORDABLE MMA SHIN GUARDS?

Yes, it is possible. There are savings packs that include MMA gloves + tubular MMA shin guards + MMA hand wraps + an MMA mouthguard, at a much lower price than buying each item separately.

CAN TUBULAR MMA SHIN GUARDS BE USED FOR OTHER DISCIPLINES OR MARTIAL ARTS?

Our recommendation is that they can be used, but you should avoid using them for training sessions that involve a lot of striking power.

  • Hand wraps

    USE OF MMA HAND WRAPS

When we talk about MMA hand wraps, we are referring to boxing wraps, but in shorter lengths—usually 2.5 meters or 3.5 meters. This is because they need to be used together with MMA gloves, which are smaller than boxing gloves.

They help prevent finger injuries, wrist sprains, and friction that can cause minor burns on the hands.
Another important function is to compact the hand and provide support to the fingers and wrist at the moment of impact.

SHOULD YOU USE MMA HAND WRAPS? YES OR NO?
Our recommendation is to always use hand wraps whenever there is impact involved.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BUYING MMA HAND WRAPS

    • Remember to buy them in 2.5 m or 3.5 m lengths. Longer wraps won’t work properly with MMA gloves.

    • Make sure they are semi-elastic.

    • Do not use gel wraps with knuckle protection.

    TIPS AND MAINTENANCE

    • Never wash them in a washing machine; it’s better to use a container and wash them by hand with mild soap.

    • Wash them every day they are used.

    • Do not leave them in a closed space after training.

    • Do not put them in the dryer; let them air dry.

    • How to roll the wraps: At Club de la Lucha, we recommend starting from the thumb loop end. Insert your thumb and roll with one hand while the other hand holds the wrap stretched to keep slight tension and make the process easier. This prevents deformation and helps extend their lifespan.

    • Always use them whenever striking during training.

  • Mouthguards

    BENEFITS OF MOUTHGUARDS IN MMA
For MMA training and competition, using a mouthguard is very important. Although it is commonly referred to as an MMA mouthguard, it is the same type that can be used in boxing, martial arts, or self-defense systems.

    It serves several important functions:
    • Protects the teeth
    • Prevents cuts inside the mouth or on the lips
    • Stabilizes the jaw
    • Distributes the impact vibrations
    • Helps regulate breathing through the nose

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE AN MMA MOUTHGUARD
A mouthguard is general protection that should be used whenever there is a possibility of contact. It is not exclusive to contact sports or martial arts.
We recommend using it both during training and in competition.

    TYPES OF MMA MOUTHGUARDS

    • Single (Upper) Mouthguards:
These are placed on the upper teeth and are the most commonly used.

Within single mouthguards, they can be classified based on how they adapt to the mouth:

    1. No filling: Made only of a rigid silicone mold.

    2. Gel mouthguard: A rigid silicone mold filled with a solid gel layer that softens when heated, allowing it to mold to your teeth.

    3. Professional paste mouthguard: Consists of a rigid mold and two compounds that, when mixed, create a paste used to shape the mouthguard to the teeth.

    • Double Mouthguards:
These protect both the upper and lower jaw. They are more uncomfortable during training because they restrict airflow compared to single mouthguards.

WHICH MOUTHGUARD SHOULD I USE, SINGLE OR DOUBLE? PROS AND CONS
The most comfortable option that allows better breathing is the single MMA mouthguard. This is the one we recommend for daily training.

Double mouthguards, commonly used in boxing, have the disadvantage of requiring you to keep your mouth closed. They are more uncomfortable and only allow breathing through small holes, making airflow more difficult.

However, they do offer advantages: they keep the mouth closed, stabilize the jaw, and are ideal for people with braces, as they help protect the lower lip from cuts.

    HOW TO MOLD MOUTHGUARDS
At Club de la Lucha, we recommend following the instructions included with the mouthguard.

However, here are some general guidelines:

    • Single mouthguard:
Place the mouthguard in boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove it (do not use a microwave—always heat water on a stovetop). Then dip it briefly (about one second) in a glass of room-temperature water. Place it in your mouth, bite firmly, and press with your fingers to adapt it to your teeth. Keep your mouth closed for one minute. Remove carefully and let it cool.

    • Gel mouthguard:
Place it in boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove it (do not use a microwave—always use a stovetop). Dip it briefly in room-temperature water for one second. Place it in your mouth, bite naturally (do not clench too hard), and keep your mouth closed for one minute without touching it. Remove carefully and let it cool.

    • Paste mouthguard:
      FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED.

    • Double mouthguard:
      Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

    MAINTENANCE
    • Rinse and dry it well after training before storing
    • Always keep it in its case
    • Store it in the same place in your gym bag or boxing backpack
    • If used for competition, choose a white or transparent one
    • Occasionally rinse it with a mixture of water and mouthwash
