  WHAT IS A JIU-JITSU UNIFORM?
  The BJJ gi, or jiu-jitsu kimono as it is most commonly known, is the specific garment used for practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Its use is mandatory for both daily training and competition.

   

  FEATURES OF A BJJ SUIT (BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU)
  A jiu-jitsu gi must meet very specific requirements: it needs to allow maximum mobility while also being resistant to grips.

  • It should have a fit as close to the body as possible, while still allowing full mobility.

  • Tapered sleeves and fitted pants.

  • We recommend a cotton jacket with pearl weave fabric to withstand grips and pulling.

   

  HOW CAN WE CLASSIFY JIU-JITSU UNIFORMS?
  There are several characteristics to consider when buying your BJJ gi:

  • By material:

  1. Cotton pearl weave jacket with ripstop pants – without a doubt, our recommendation.

  2. Cotton jacket and pants – not a bad option, but ripstop pants are more comfortable and do not shrink when washed.

  3. Ripstop jacket and pants – not recommended. Although durable and lightweight, the lapel is thinner, making training harder and giving your opponent an easier grip. It also lacks pearl weave fabric and is less resistant.

  • Weight:
  It is very important to choose the right fabric weight. BJJ gis typically come in 360 gsm, 450 gsm, and 650 gsm. For competition, we recommend checking current regulations.

  • Color:
  Color choice is important if the gi will be used in competition. As with weight, check the current rules. The most practical colors are white, blue, and black.
  The same applies to patches and embroidery—always consult competition regulations.

   

  BJJ GI SIZES – WHICH SIZE SHOULD I CHOOSE?
  Gi sizes are based on a combination of height and weight.
  They are labeled as A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, and sometimes A5.

  There is no exact universal sizing chart, as each brand has its own pattern. Our recommendation is to seek advice from a specialized seller. In our BJJ and MMA store, we will gladly provide the information you need.

   

  CAN I USE A JUDO UNIFORM FOR BJJ TRAINING?
  The answer is no. Although the fabric weight and pearl weave of the jacket may seem similar, the reinforcements and stress points of a BJJ gi are different from those of a judo gi. Over time and with washing, a judo gi may tear.

  Another important difference is the fit: judo gis are looser, making it easier for your opponent to grip, which puts you at a disadvantage.

   

  TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR BJJ SUIT

  • Wash in cold water and do not use a dryer.

  • Have at least two gis so you don’t always use the same one, as they take time to dry.

  • Do not expose it directly to sunlight while drying to prevent color fading.

   

  BEST JIU-JITSU UNIFORM BRANDS FOR BEGINNERS

  When starting BJJ, we recommend buying a good-quality gi at a reasonable price (you will have time later to invest in more specialized and expensive ones). Always look for an option that includes a white belt for better value.

  Choose a jacket weight of around 450 gsm so it can also be used for competition in the medium term.

  Good beginner options include Utuk and Buddha gis.

  For intermediate or advanced levels, Venum and Manto gis are excellent choices.

  MEANING OF THE BJJ BELT
  The BJJ belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a symbol of progress and skill within the martial art. The belt progression process in BJJ generally involves demonstrating technical abilities, knowledge of the martial art, and an ongoing commitment to practice and learning. Belts not only represent a practitioner's skill level, but also their dedication and the time invested in the discipline. Many practitioners consider the belt promotion process to be a personal journey of growth and development.

   

  CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BJJ BELT
  Unlike traditional martial arts belts, the ones specifically used in BJJ have some very distinct features:

  • They have a black bar of approximately 10 cm at the end of one side (on the black BJJ belt this bar is red) where the degree stripes are placed.

  • They are stiffer than traditional martial arts belts.

  • Their sizing is determined by the A0-A1-A2-A3-A4 system rather than by centimeters.

   

  COLORS OF BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU BELTS
  The belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a symbol of progress and skill within the martial art. Belt colors vary according to the BJJ ranking system, but they commonly range from white (for beginners) to black (for experts).

  They are characterized by having a rank bar that indicates additional progress within a specific belt color. On all BJJ belts this bar is black, except on the black belt where it is red.

  The color sequence according to adult experience level (with white being the beginner level) is as follows:

  • White belt with black bar

  • Blue belt with black bar

  • Purple belt with black bar

  • Brown belt with black bar

  • Black belt with red bar

   

  RECOMMENDATIONS AND TIPS

  • Do not wash in the washing machine or use a dryer.

  • Remove it from the sports bag after training and air it out in a cool, dry place.

  • Do not iron.

  • Buy a quality BJJ belt, as it takes time to move from one belt rank to another.

  When purchasing a Rasguard for BJJ or Grapling you should pay special attention to quality. We recommend spending a little more money and buying something of good quality since you must bear in mind that the rashguard will be exposed to daily use, grips, rubbing, etc. Another thing to take into account in the quality is that it is breathable to avoid excess sweat.
