How to differentiate when buying a BJJ kimono from a Judo kimono

Both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu use the popular kimono of Japanese origin, which is composed of three pieces: jacket, trousers and belt.

Both kimonos used in the two disciplines of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo are made of cotton and polyester, but there are several differences between them, both in characteristics and in the raw materials used in their manufacture. The different disciplines use different weights of cotton in the fabric, hence their durability and weight.

The cut and pattern are different, the Jiu Jitsu models being a bit tighter than the Judo models, especially in the jacket, while the trousers have the same cut. Then we could mention that judogi trousers are always made of cotton, but BJJ kimonos can also be made of Ripstop material (a material with an extreme durability).

In judo, only two colours are used: white and blue. They do not usually have large patches, on the contrary, you can hardly see the logo of the brand as they try to print it in a small way.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu kimonos are visually very similar to Judo kimonos but the main difference is that in BJJ kimonos usually have a much wider variety of designs and it is easy to see kimonos with many patches or areas and seams of different colours than the fabric. Besides, among the basic colours, black is added to the white and blue of Judo. And without the possibility of using them for competition but for training, there are other much more striking colours but only for training.

The sizing is a little bit different, in BJJ+-+``

is measured in A0, A1, A2, A3andA4 each one has its equivalent measurements in centimetres unlike the judogis that are measured by centimetres of height.

In this article we are going to point out some differences between these two disciplines, as they both start from the same base but with a lot of difference.
